Like most people, I’ve usually got a number of games that I’m playing at any one time, all at various stages of play. I need to get some of these completed so that I can wipe them off my list and get started on a few other games. These are the current games I’m playing:

PS2

  • Tomb Raider: Legend
  • Rogue Galaxy
  • Ratchet & Clank Deadlocked
  • Psychonauts

Xbox

  • Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath
  • Halo 2

PC

  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
  • Tron 2.0
  • Puzzle Quest
  • Majesty
  • Command & Conquer
  • Dune 2000
  • Starcraft
  • Dungeon Siege
  • Guild Wars
  • Civilization IV
  • Prey

Wii/GameCube

  • Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
  • Okami
  • Metroid Prime

Nintendo DS

  • Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
  • Mystery Dungeon: Shiren The Wanderer

Yup, it’s about time I finished playing some of these games…

 GuildWarsNewYear2009-2
It’s Canthan New Year again, and we’re about to start giving the chefs the ingredients for the celestial meals. The wife, my daughter and I are all in District 29 in Shing Jea waiting for the arrival of the Celestial Ox.  Hopefully there’s plenty of other people in the district who have the remaining ingredients we don’t because we’ve only got about half of what we need. Some of the drop rates for the rarer items were really low and we didn’t get any of several. There’s still time to farm them today, so if things don’t go to plan in the next ten minutes, we can still recover.

GuildWarsJingleBear

For those that didn’t manage to complete the four quests in the Guild Wars Wintersday Festival that unlocked the Jingle Bear in Gwen’s garden, there’s a relatively simple hack that will allow you to get access to and tame the Jingle Bear.  Just make sure that you have someone in your party that has completed the quest, and the bear will appear in the garden. Send in the character you want to tame the bear, and you’re all set. The bear will persist with the character until you get rid of it with a Tamer. The only drawback is that you want more than one character to have it, you’ll need to go back into Eye of the North then out again with someone who has completed the quests.

I see a whole income stream appearing in-game…

CanthanNewYear2008

One of the greatest things about Guild Wars is the various festivals that are held throughout the year. We recently just had the Wintersday Festival, but now it’s time for the Canthan New Year. With the Canthan New Year, this year being The Year of the Ox, comes the Great Feast, in which a number of chefs prepare dishes for the celestial creature of the year, and which players can get involved in by gathering the ingredients needed for each meal.

I’ve compiled a list of the ingredients and where to get them in one place, to make it easier for myself and others to know what to farm. The list below shows all five Imperial Chefs and what they are looking for, as well as where it may be found. Each entry is linked to the Guild Wars Wiki maintained at the original Guild Wars website so that you can drill down for specific information. Keep in mind that this information is based on what’s in the Wiki, and on last year’s requirements, and could be subject to change for this year.

BioshockSteam

BioShock is one of those games I’ve been holding out on getting, mostly because I don’t own a Xbox 360 and I don’t have a powerful enough computer to run it well. I was planning on waiting until either of those situations changed, and the price dropped to around $10 or so. However, Steam are currently doing a huge Year End Sale with a lot of titles heavily discounted. BioShock, which originally arrived for $49.99 and dropped quickly to $19.99 was always on my list of games to buy, but this Year End Sale put the price at $4.99. There’s no way I can ever beat that price at retail, unless I get a used opened copy, so I bit the bullet and bought it. Even if I can’t play it right now, I’ll have it in my Steam account so that when I do get a better computer, I’ll be able to fully enjoy it. Of course, the wife’s laptop can run it just fine, so I might be commandeering that to play on.

PreyWebsite

While I understand the need to add copy protection to games, I have a special hatred for SecuROM, which comes with a number of different games, including Prey. I received Prey as a Crimble gift, but didn’t realize it had SecuROM protection until I tried to install it on my laptop. I popped the first install disk into my drive, where it decided to spin rapidly and do little else. This happened multiple times, and I was concerned that I had a faulty disk. I decided to switch of the real-time AV check, and disabled a few other programs, but to no avail.

That’s when I checked online and found that Prey used SecuROM in its retail incarnation. Great! Then the strangest thing happened, and the games started to install. I have no idea why, but the game managed to install eventually. I popped online to the Prey support site and found that the latest set of patches REMOVED the SecuROM protection. So, quick as a fiddle, I downloaded Patch 1.4 and installed it, took the disk out of the drive and loaded the game. Lo, it worked, allowing for the following piece of justice about 3-5 minutes into gameplay, just before Tommy got sucked up into a giant spaceship, and after he went to town on them with a wrench for hitting on his girl. These guys obviously can’t quit each other.

TwoDeadRednecks

Now that the game is installed, and I’ve got the settings optimized for a decent, albeit three year old, laptop, I can enjoy the game, and knock some aliens on the head. I’ve played into the third scene, and the game really does deserve the M for Mature rating that it’s got, and not just for language. This game has gore in it, and lots of it, and it’s got that whole Doom 3 creepy monster-in-the-closet vibe going on, but with portls. I have a feeling I’m really going to enjoy playing this game all the way through.

WH40KDawnOfWar

While browsing Half Price Books last night, I found a used copy of Warhammer 40K Dawn of War Gold, which includes the Dawn of War game, plus the expansion Winter Assault for $10. I was sorely tempted to pick it up, even although GameTap has signed a deal with THQ and has released the game today as part of the GameTap service. When games come to GameTap they typically stay around for around a year or so at minimum, so I’ll have plenty of time to play the game through GameTap before having to find myself an offline copy. The only drawback to playing via GameTap is that I need an Internet connection to initially connect to GameTap and verify I can run each game.  This isn’t usually a problem, as I usually have my laptop at home, the in-laws or at the college.

I was first introduced to Space Marines when I got heavily into tabletop roleplaying games at the tender age of 14 or so. The Ultra Marines were my first unit, and I religiously bought White Dwarf magazine every issue so that I could get the updates. Eventually the Mentor Legion became my favorite chapter of Space Marines, so I’m hoping I can get some action in as those. I’ll be playing some WH40K over the next week or so to get a feel for it (although Guild Wars may interfere with that.

Anyone up for some Ork-bashing?

Wonderland Severs Grand Opening

When you put an ad together for a set of new game servers in a distant continent that speaks a different language, it’s a good idea to not only:

  • Proofread the text in the ad.
  • Ensure that any graphics in the ad - which should be sexually stimulating - don’t suddenly take on a whole new meaning in light of any typos.

I found this ad for Wonderland Online at the I Can Has Cheezburger? website when doing a search, and will admit to being drawn into the ad by the seductive pose of the girl in the picture (I’m male – it’s genetic). Then I noticed the typo regarding the GRAND REOPENING of their new game servers. Seems that people in Europe are playing a version of the game involving uniped re-animated corpses that have to lean against ad borders so they don’t fall down, or you only get to play half a character. Of course, with Anime-inspired games, anything is possible. Anything.

ForceUnleashedBeginning

Yesterday I picked up my copy of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for the Wii. I was helping a friend move yesterday, so I had to put it aside until I finished that, and got home from work. As soon as I got home from work, the disc went into the Wii and I loaded it up.

I was thrown for a loop, because at the beginning you get to play Darth Vader first, as he hunts down a Jedi on Kashyyyk, but this gives you a chance to get used to the controls and some of the Force powers. Once you confront and defeat the Jedi (which takes a little bit of time as you’re still getting used to the controls), the main story breaks open and you get to to play Vader’s errand boy.

I’m only about 2 hours into the game right now, but I’ve already had a couple of “Oh Sh!t” moments, particularly in boss battles, which are incredibly cinematic. I’ve gotten used to the control scheme now and am able to manipulate the world around me quite well with my force powers, which are incredibly powerful if you chain them correctly. There’s something just quite awe-inspiring about slamming stormtroopers backwards through doorways and into the cold of space using your mind, and taking down AT-STs is child’s play when you’ve got a lightsaber in your hand. Kicking Rodian butt is also rather fun (and allows me some payback for Lucas changing it so that Han didn’t shoot first).

My major issue with the game is that the camera seems to be borked at times, and it’s easy to get caught behind scenery and not be able to move. Enemies also sometimes cluster around you, and you can easily be swarmed and unable to get moved, but other games such as Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time suffer from this as well. Controls at times can also be unresponsive particularly if you’ve just executed a sequence of attacks, but the game is reasonably forgiving. Taking a leaf from other games, if you die, you restart at the last quick save point, less some gained Force Points. This means you can take on boss battles and not get kicked to the curb too much, and you don’t feel the game is punishing you. It’s also easy to level up some of your Force powers early in the game, which means you can do even more impressive moves. My favorite so far has been doing a Force Dash by running forward to meet oncoming enemies and then performing a couple of Force Pushes in sequence, which throws them backwards, usually taking them out completely – it’s a great way to clear corridors and enclosed spaces of enemies. Heal units are also scattered well throughout areas, so you can always recharge before moving into a new area, giving you at least have a fighting chance if you stumble into a boss.

Overall, the game is awesome, and even although the Wii version has less depth in graphics than the 360 or PS3 version, the gameplay is intact. I’ll be playing more later today, just as soon as I manage to let my left arm heal, which is sore from moving an overly-heavy bed sofa yesterday.

SAGoonCity

Contributors to the Something Awful website have been working on building a huge pixel art city called Goon City. Take a look at it and see how many references you can get. There’s a number of awesome pop culture references as well as a ton of geek references, including those you an see above: Stargate, Castle Grayskull, and X-Com. There are literally hundreds in this huge map, so it’s best to view the page fullscreen.

ShirenTheWanderer

Over the past week we’ve picked up a few more Nintendo DS games. My daughter had some birthday money to spend and she wanted some Pokemon games, so we obliged by taking her to the local second-hand game store, where she could get more bang for her buck. She picked up Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time.

I’ve been playing a lot of Mystery Dungeon: Shiren The Wanderer, is a non-Pokemon version of the above games. We also picked up Star Wars: Lethal Alliance, Wario: Master of Disguise and Drawn to Life. Not too shabby for about $75 or so.

BattlefieldHeroesScots

Now, THIS game I’m looking forward to. I’ve been following the development of Battlefield Heroes for some time, particularly because it’s going to be free (ad and micro-transaction supported) and it’s been getting a lot of good press from the GFW guys. The fact that I get to put my guy in a kilt and descend upon the enemy totting automatic weapons is just pure icing on the cake. Finally, a game that takes the concept of clans seriously!

FacebookDungeons&Dragons

I’ve found myself addicted to playing the new Dungeons & Dragons Tiny Adventures that’s available on Facebook. I tend to leave it running in the background while I do other thins on the Interwebs, flipping back to its tab to check my current quest status. It’s absolutely nothing like sitting around a table with your friends, but it’s fun in a online Tunnels & Trolls-type way. You can help to buff your friends in their quests, but it’s really missing a multi-player component, even if that component is just multiple people going on the quest together and playing through turns. It’d also be improved if you could trade items with other players, because I end up selling a lot of stuff that I’ve got duplicates of. Still, it’s a lot of fun, and keeps me amused while sitting at work, at least, when the servers aren’t crashing because there’s too many people playing it.

NoRedAlert3

EA have announce that they’re going to stick with SECUROM for their games, including Red Alert 3 [via Kotaku]. This means that I’ll not be buying Red Alert 3 any time soon, and will hold off until I can go back in time, and rewrite the past to get rid of the copy protection system on the disc.

Either that, or I might end up considering getting an Xbox 360, and get the game on that platform, although I’ll feel as if I’m betraying my PC gaming legacy by doing so.

ForceUnleashedBatmanLEGO

At the weekend, we traded in a bunch of DVD sets for in-store credit at VGMX, and pre-ordered both Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and LEGO Batman for the Wii. As I’m going to be off school for the next couple of weeks, and working a short schedule at work, I’m going to be able to get in a lot of gaming.

We’ve still got a little store credit left, and I’m wanting to apply that to Spore for the Wii, but seeing as the release date for that is way, way off, I might just apply it to a couple of other used Wii games. There is absolutely NO way that I’m going to get the PC version of Spore, for a couple of reasons:

  • $59.99 per copy, and we’d need more than one copy as we have multiple computers here in the house.
  • It uses SECUROM protection [Kotaku] on the disc, and I’m not putting that crap anywhere near my computers.
  • Getting it on the Wii means that whoever’s not playing it can play the laptops.

Until then I’m sure I’ll have my hands full playing both these games. You never know, I might even finish a LEGO game before either Mrs Teh Bagder or the kids for once.

GOGBeta

This morning I got my beta access key to the Good Old Games website. I’ve been looking forward to this as the games that they are planning to offer will be low priced PC games that are DRM-free and will run on XP & Vista (as you can see above). The initial catalogue is mostly Interplay and Codemasters games, and I already own most of the games available, but the sweet thing about the beta is that if you buy 1 game, you’ll get 1 free if you signed up for the early beta before Sept 8th (which I did).

FreeRealmsConstruction

Sony are currently in the process of developing FreeRealms, which they plan to release not only on the PS3, but on the PC too. Although there isn’t much information available, FreeRealms is planned to be a more kid-friendly MMO than any of the other offerings that Sony are working on. One of the neat twists on FreeRealms is that it looks like it’ll be a combination of Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, World of Warcraft and Wizardry 101. I’m looking forward to seeing more information on the game, but until Sony have released more information on the game, enjoy their rather groovy “under construction” page with the dancing Whateveritis.
